Microbiota-tumor system on chip: development of a microfluidic device to study interactions between the human microbiota and spheroids of colorectal cancer.
To develop a microfluidic system to study the interaction between microorganisms characteristic of the microbiota of the human intestine and spheroids of colorectal cancer. This will allow to carry out basic or applied research in controlled environments, in less time and at a lower cost than what is currently done through experimental systems based on animal models or clinical studies based on stool analysis.
By integrating two organ-on-chip systems, we will study how some of the organisms in our microbiota contribute to inhibiting cancerous processes. One of these two systems will simulate what happens in our intestines. Another will recreate a cancerous process, by keeping a small colorectal tumor in culture. We will analyze how the products of the former, generated by bacteria typical of human microbiota, affect the growth of the latter's tumor. This knowledge will allow us to better attack colorectal cancers.
